This one minute petrol purity test can save your bike from damage!

Ever wondered why the mileage of your bike went down suddenly? And that constant drag in your engine. Or having had to clean or change the filter or carburettor? One of the major reason behind these menace is the adulteration. Fuel adulteration is as old as the Fuel industry itself. It has been one of the age old practices of mafias, fuel industries and distributors alike. While mixing other solvents (liquids) in fuel like Petrol, diesel and aviation fuel is not permissible, few spirits like ethanol are permissible t be mixed with fuel being sold. The most common type of fuel adulteration are mixing diesel and kerosene in petrol which can be detected through the change in color of petrol. Traces of diesel and kerosene in petrol can cause seizure of the engine due to difference in combustion and can cause permanent damage to the engines.

Many other solvents are mixed in petrol. However there is a very effective and cost effective way of testing the quality of the petrol. This is also known as the filter paper test. All it requires is a filter paper (or can be done using your palm instead as well). Take a drop of petrol from the nozzle of the petrol station onto the filter paper. Being a very volatile substance, the petrol should evaporate in no time, usually in seconds. If the petrol evaporates completely within a minute then it signifies purity of petrol. If it leaves behind any forms of stains or solvent, that is the impurities added to the petrol. It takes less than a minute to detect the purity of the petrol. So the next time you feel suspicious about the performance of your bike, don’t forget to pay a visit to the petrol station and conduct the test! Have a enjoyable ride.
