Construction work in Biratnagar will be put on hold due to monsoon

Gopalprasad pokharel,(Morang), June 13: The construction of drainage pipe and sewer line in Biratnagar thoroughfare – which started two years ago – will be put on hold again with the arrival of the monsoon season. The construction was postponed citing that the downpour will impact the work and cause damages. The various wards of Biratnagar are punctuated with potholes and the delay in completion of the sewerage system has further enraged the town dwellers. The construction company repairing the roads and the drainage system has not heeded to residents' call for ramping up the construction. Medium City Integrated Environmental Reform Project's Project Manager, Upendra Baral, said the construction work of such a nature that will not be impacted by the monsoon rain will be given continuity. The construction-contract holder company, Kalika Construction Pvt, has not even managed the debris and boulders left after the construction of the sewerage system creating further hassles for pedestrians on the road and risking safety. A school bus had fallen over the ditch on Thursday at Roadshes Chowk of Biratnagar. The bus was pulled out by a crane. The snail-pace work has been a nagging factor for the city dwellers. The construction company has so far laid 27 km of drainage pipes, which is far less than the agreement to complete 62 km of pipes by this time of the year. Only 52 per cent of the overall work has been completed so far. Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will extend financial assistance of Rs 2.60 billion for Biratnagar city's development. The money will now be used for laying sewerage system at places where it was left out and black topping the roads where the work has completed, according to Biratnagar Sub Metropolis Executive Officer, Gopal Prasad Regmi.
