War movies the new norm – Nishant Dhungana

Kathmandu was heated by the release of movie named White Sun which reads Seto Surya in Nepali. Seto Surya was a movie based on post-insurgency era which was screened across many film festivals of the globe and was able to win awards on different genres. Before this movie a movie named Kalo Pothi had also raised the temperature of the country as it was released inside the country. Kalo-pothi was a movie based during the insurgency. This movie was also screened at many big festivals and also was able to win awards on different topics. Before that, another movie called ‘Talakjung vs. Tulke, also a movie based on War was chosen to compete at the Oscars in the non-English movie category. Though it was trans-created from a Chinese play, it was able to win over critics and viewers inside the country. And Lastly ‘Badshala’ a Nepali movie was banned because it contained war-time material and showed brutality of state during war-time. Apart from these movies there are many movies which are set during the war time but I felt these War-time Movies worth sharing.

Movies differs from director to director. Some directors try to fantasize the story given to them while some try to touch ground reality. Realistic directors try every possible angle through which they can make the story real and connect with many people. Though all the story mentioned above are fictional, but to some extent they try to connect the story with the common people. Changing the topic, the above mentioned movies were based on war or post war time. In almost every movies, the directors have tried hard to portray the story that could connect with the people. For more than two decades, our film industry seemed like they had run out of story. They created and re-created the old stories and used the same craft of storytelling which bored almost all the generation of the country and now story based on war time are coming as new material for us and has improved the standard of films. Many stories on war have vanished and many are about to go extinct. These movies can be a good documentation of that period. Unwillingly now war has become a part of our part and our country life so rather than regretting in it now we can use these materials to educate the citizens of our country since movies have become a great material for learning and wroth-sharing.
