The new Samsung flagship is here. Hopefully this one doesn’t burn. The S7 edge is still one of the most formidable smartphones out there. And with the S8 and S8 plus, Samsung has just bettered the best to say the least.

Both S8 and S8 plus now have curved screens this time around with the gorgeous looking super OLED screens with QHD plus resolutions which is an update from earlier. It is not noticable by the bare eyes but will make a huge difference while viewing VR content. The displays are also bigger at 5.8 and 6.2 inch respectively, and astonishingly in the same form factor as S7 and S7 edge! Thanks to the trimmed down bezels at the top and bottom. Therefore the S8 looks exactly like the concept phones from the 2010; bezel-less. The looks are from the future.

The back is just like the previous year with the same class leading 12 mp sony sensor somewhat refined. However Samsung has added new post processing capabilities like capturing multiple shots at multiple exposure (f-stops) to give the best exposed shots. The front facing 8 mp shooter now has auto focus and face detection.

Other standalone feature were Bibex and Dex. Bibex is an AI assistant which Samsung claims to learn from the user preferences. Samsung has also dedicated a button on the left side for it. The company claims it to be more responsive and smart compared to its counterparts. Dex is another device that allows the S8 to dock into any large screen displays and pcs to run the apps on the bigger screen. This could potentially be a challenge to the windows phone ecosystem.

These phones will be the first ones to come with the 10 nm soc architecture with either Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset or Samsungs Exynos chipset. These are expected to have a 10% efficient CPU, 20% efficient GPU and upto 40% power efficient. The only downside is the battery which is the same 3000 and 3500 mah for the 5.8 and 6.2 inch QHD monsters. This will likely hurt the battery life despite despite a new power efficient chipset.

Apart from these, the phone retains many other features from older galaxies like an iris scanner, heart sensor, ip7 grade water resistance, aluminium build, 4 gigs of RAM and micro sim extension.
All in all, Samsung’s latest offering is gorgeous and packs in all the punches. And do you need to upgrade from the S7? Not really. It is a better S7, but not necessarily a major upgrade apart from the bezellessness. Buy it for the looks, and the iris scanner.
